BaselWorld 2018

10 Brands Representing the Best of the Best at Baselworld 2018

Baselworld is the most important annual event for the watch and jewelry industry. Every March, the most important brands, manufacturers, distributors, buyers and media representatives in the industry gather at the Messe Basel Fairgrounds in Switzerland.

This year the show is shorter, running between March 22 and March 27, and smaller with between 600 and 700 exhibitors instead of the previous 1,300. So only the best of the best will have secured a space.

There’s still plenty to see and even the most enthusiastic attendee won’t be able to get around all the brands on show. We’ve compiled our list of the 10 must-see, not to be missed brands to add to your own personal favorites.

1. Raymond Weil

At the time of Raymond Weil’s creation in 1976, they wanted to bring luxury Swiss watchmaking within the reach of a wider public. The brand has always been influenced and inspired by a love of music and has just released the Bob Marley tango 300 limited edition – a tribute to the life and musical career of one of the most influential artists of all time. They have limited manufacturing of this timepiece to just 600 pieces, only in the Caribbean.

Following on from their previous standout BaselWorld booths featuring Sinatra, then the Beatles and last year celebrating the spirit of Gibson’s iconic Les Paul guitar, we’re crossing our fingers for a Bob Marley inspired booth this year.

2. Breguet

Don’t miss Breguet presenting the first new model of their 2018 collection – the enamel-dialed version of their Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat.

The Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat has been a consistent part of the Breguet collection since it was introduced in 2013. On the front of this model there is a beautiful grand feu enamel dial with an opening for the tourbillon itself.

The Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat is presented in 18k rose gold with a fluted case band and an open case back that lends a view onto the thin, complex movement inside.

3. Hamilton

For true military watch enthusiasts, there is often a choice between vintage pieces that seem small and flimsy in comparison to today’s models, or a modern clunky, oversized ‘vintage-inspired’ piece. However, at Baselworld 2018, Hamilton will be debuting the perfect military watch in both size and feature, with their new Khaki Field Mechanical.

Fans of original military watches will recognize common features including a bead blasted stainless steel case, mechanical movement, and 50 meters of water resistance. The watches will be available in two dial choices, either black, due to be released in February. or matte brown, for release in May.

This watch presents a highly attractive and reasonably priced option for a wearer looking for an upgraded version of a classic military watch.

4. Mondaine

The Smartwatch hasn’t quite taken off as expected. The main problem being that a blank screen on your wrist with a plastic strap just isn’t that stylish.

The hybrid smartwatch could change that. It offers an attractive, fashionable watch face of your choice, but includes smartwatch features. Mondaine has a new Smartwatch model which is proving popular with the fashionistas.

The Mondaine Helvetica 1 Smartwatch offers a luxury watch that feels the same weight and quality as a regular watch. It tracks your activity, you can adjust the display on the second dial to what you want, and we loved the sleep cycle alarm. Exhibiting in a showroom just outside the main BaselWorld complex we still think this luxury Swiss watch brand is worth a visit.

5. Frederique Constant

Another luxury company offering a Smarwatch is Frederique Constant . The beautifully crafted Smartwatch will feature in their Notify range

The elegant watch-face is shielded by scratchproof sapphire crystal glass, and is waterproof to 3 atmospheres. Smart features include activity and sleep tracking, sleep alarms, and notifications.

6. Luminox

The Luminox Navy SEAL watch is the timepiece that made Luminox famous. Their watches were Authorized For Navy Use (A.N.U) in 1993, and since then stand for a commitment to cutting-edge luminescence and readability in high performance sports watches.

The latest evolution in the model is the Navy SEAL 3500 series. It is slightly larger than the original at 45mm and comes in seven colors from black to the color favored by divers, yellow.

7. Blancpain

Blancpain was established in 1930 and from that time has played a pioneering role in the history of ladies’ watches by presenting the first self-winding wristwatch for women. Since then, they have continued their innovation by miniaturizing movements in order to equip feminine models with horological complications that were previously only seen in men’s watches.

The Blancpain Women’s collection offers hand-finished and decorated self-winding movements and is specially designed with the expectations of women in mind.

The watchmaking know-how and cutting-edge technology of Blancpain are devoted to the cause of beauty.

8. Rolex

When you think of luxury watch brands, it’s impossible not to include Rolex. Last year at Baselworld, Rolex introduced the stunning Cellini Moonphase with a full moon design, depicted by a meteorite applique.

As Baselworld 2018 marks the 65th Anniversary of the Rolex Submariner watch, some experts are speculating about a surprise Submariner special edition.  But even without any special editions, there’s no doubt the Rolex stand will be one of the biggest and most innovative at the show.

9. Breitling

Breitling has played a crucial role in developing the wrist chronograph and are a leader in this field. They have recently produced a new model of the Chronoliner, the ‘flight captain’s watch’. There are just 250 in the limited-edition version and this will undoubtedly be on show at Baselworld 2018.

10. Seiko

This year is the 50th anniversary of the first Seiko Professional diver – the 6159-7000 from 1968. It is therefore highly likely that a reissue of this model will be released at Baselworld in March.
